Sonar comes to Colombia

After twenty years in Barcelona, Sonar festival to cross the Atlantic

Colombia’s festival scene continues to grow this year, as iconic Spanish festival Sonar has revealed it is coming to Bogota for the first time on December 7.

On the heels of scheduled events in Buenos Aires and Santiago, Bogota perhaps seems an unusual choice, but the decision to bring the festival to the Andean city reflects how Colombia’s music scene is expanding and attracting more international artists.

This year, the capital has already hosted artists such as the Foo Fighters and Kings of Leon, and System of a Down and Katy Perry are billed for later this year.

The electronic festival, which originated in Barcelona in 1994, has seen headliners such as Kraftwerk, Daft Punk, New Order, Beastie Boys and The Chemical Brothers. It’s no surprise, then, that Colombia’s very own Bomba Estereo is involved in this year’s set.

Bogota is set to celebrate Sonar at the same time as the capitals of the continent’s cool Cono Sur countries, a more than promising sign for Colombian music. While Sonar has previously been in Brazil and Argentina, this is the first time it has visited Colombia, following on from Sonar events across four continents since the event first landed in London in 2002. There is also the potential for up-and-coming Colombian artists to head over to Barcelona.

With so much in store for the months ahead, 2015 continues to look like a great year for Colombia’s music scene. (Ticket prices and festival location yet to be announced).
