FARC call on gov’t to begin peace talks with ELN

The FARC rebels on Saturday May 2 called on the government to begin peace talks with Colombia’s second largest rebel group, the ELN.

Bilateral ceasefire unlikely before peace accord: Santos

President Juan Manuel Santos once again dismissed the idea of a bilateral ceasefire with the FARC guerrillas last week, saying that such a truce will likely only take place after a peace accord with the rebels is signed.

No peace deal without release of Simón Trinidad: FARC

Without the release of rebel leader Simón Trinidad, the FARC will not agree to any peace deal, guerrilla negotiators in Havana said on Tuesday last week. Trinidad is serving a 60-year sentence in the US after being convicted of kidnapping three Americans in Colombia.

US to invest in Colombia’s demining efforts

The US will give USD$5 million to Colombia over the next two years to help in its demining efforts, US Deputy Secretary of State announced on Monday last week.
